En Plein Air Painting For Beginners.
Painting en plein air is something I look forward to as a landscape artist every year. The weather starts to warm up, the landscape is beginning to grow and bloom, and inspiration is fresh - time to pack up the paint supplies and head to the lake! (or wherever inspiration strikes).
I want to begin by simply saying that if you are looking for the right outdoor easel to buy, or specific en plein air gear you might need, this post is not for you! I’m here to give some simple tips and tricks that I have learned for a very basic en plein air experience. You don’t have to be a seasoned pro to paint outside - my favourite is bringing a few supplies to the beach!
I feel extremely blessed to live in the Okanagan as there are countless spots within a short distance that make great plein air painting locations. Provincial parks, beaches, downtown, your own backyard - wherever you feel comfortable and inspired is where you should start. Once you’ve done it a few times, you will know what you actually need (and don’t need!) as every artist is different, but to help you get started here is a list of what I like to bring with me:
a few basic paint colours (white, primary colours, and maybe one or two more if I feel inspired)
2-3 paint brushes
small pad of mixed media paper
jar of water (with a lid)
paper plates (to use as palettes)
paper towel and/or a rag
spray bottle (acrylic paint dries fast outdoors, so I will spray my palette occasionally to keep it wet)
picnic blanket or something to sit on
water and snacks for me ;)
The key to painting outdoors is packing light - bring as little as possible because you’ll have to carry it in and out. Sometimes all you need is some pastels or a pencil and sketchbook!
I hope this inspires you to take your creativity outdoors this summer and try some en plein air painting! There is just something special about creating outside. I’d love to help if you have any questions, and I’d love to hear any advice or tips you use if you’re an en plein air painter - leave a comment! :)
