7 Tips For Displaying Art In Your Home
Displaying art in your home is an amazing way to add personality and character to a space, and the type of art you display can change the entire atmosphere of a room (think minimalistic line drawing verses a big, bold, colourful abstract!).
But did you also know that the way you display your art can make a huge impact? Yep. I’ve walked into homes before and have cringed at how they are displaying their artwork. No matter how beautiful the piece is, if it’s not displayed properly, it can have a negative impact design wise.
That all being said - it really can be quite simple to display your artwork beautifully and professionally in your home, and with these 7 tips, I have no doubt your art will be looking amazing in no time!
Consider the space.
Before you even purchase your art, consider where you would like it displayed in your home - what size and orientation would look best? Typically, it should be the same shape/orientation of the wall you are meaning to fill.
If in doubt, go big.
This is the easiest way to fill a space. Also, slightly-too-big-art always looks better than slightly-too-small (too small a piece in a big space will leave it looking awkward!) If your art is on paper, you can always buy a bigger frame with a wide mat for a really beautiful look.
Create a gallery wall.
If your piece of art is too small for a larger space, try gathering 3-5 small to medium sized pieces to display together. Have fun and mix and match - there are no rules here! (Although an odd number of pieces does look best).
4. Display smaller art in a smaller space.
As I said before, hanging a small piece of art in a large space can look very awkward and uncomfortable. Instead, look for a smaller space to display it - think: above a shelf, a skinny wall, on a nightstand - get creative!
5. Hang art at eye level.
Of course there are exceptions to this, but rule of thumb is artwork looks best hung at eye level - approximately 57-60” above the floor or 4-6” above furniture.
6. Skip the nails.
No need to put holes in your wall if that’s not your thing. A great way to display your art is by leaning it on your mantle, or consider a floating picture shelf - you can even swap your artwork out!
7. Think outside the box.
Art doesn’t only have to be hung above the mantle or piano; display your art in unexpected places! Think: in the kitchen, hallway, bathroom, entrance - there are so many places to display your art ;)
